Great looking product. The first time i filled mine I left the seed outlet in the fully open position. Big mistake. All the seed was gone in a day. Most of it on the ground under the feeder. The outlet is adjustable, so adjust it to its smallest position. The birds can still get at the seed.
The best things about this feeder are the removable tray which can be easily emptied whilst the feeder is still up if the seed has got too wet and the changeable seed type selector insert. Apart from that it isn’t the best design for a bird feeder overall.
Im using it to use some cheap seed that I’m not too bothered about waste but when that is used I’ll be taking it down. Its a shame because Peckish Bird Food is top quality. There are just two points that I would like to highlight that could be improved. The hanging loop needs to be a little bit longer, as in order to place it on one of the hanging sites I have to tip it on its side, which means seed falls out of the ports.
The other option is to unscrew the top, place that on first, then try to screw the body back on, which can be a little difficult. The little tray underneath is a good idea to capture falling seed, but it needs to be a greater diameter with a higher lip, as the tray soon fills up with seed, then starts falling to the ground, defeating its objective.
I have overcome this problem by attaching large plant saucers underneath, which have cured this problem. I hope these small oversights can be rectified in the future. One person found this helpful. The saucer at the bottom only serves to trap rain water which inturn plugs up the seed hole, it’s also brittle and breaks easily. The perch is very flimsy and the sparrows don’t like sitting on it.
Walter Harrison fliptop seed feeder are much much better! Easy to fill,easy to clean and good value for money. I use sunflower hearts in mine and the goldfinches,bluetits,coaltits,robins use it through the day. This feeder can be adapted to be filled with nyjer seeds by twisting the inner adapter to one side. It is my second peckish feeder ,I like this design and decent price. Would recommend. Disappointed with this feeder. The handle is flimsy and the base tray which catches seed that birds discard is tiny compared to the old version.
These feeders were always robust and I have many old ones but will not be purchasing any more as the quality now is not good. I have a number of bird feeders in my garden; but for some reason the birds seem to to like these best.
